OMG I’m in love with this city!

[please note that I’ll be updating this post with information throughout the week]

I’m fascinated by cities under cities.

Ancient Romans built a temple for goddess Sulis Minerva upon natural hot springs, well known to locals as a place for miraculous healing. Those invaders liked to relax after a day of invasion and slaughter.

Like much of England’s history, years of human existence buried the Roman baths. In 1727, the golden head of Minerva was unearthed during the creation of a sewer trench on Stall Street. However, there was no concrete effort to find other ruins.

In 1775, further work broke through rubble enclosing the Roman site. The recovered bathing areas stand below the current street level and can only be viewed with entry into the museum.

Word to the wise: make this the FIRST thing you do when you begin touristing in Bath. If you want your photos to be Instagram worthy and free of other like-minded gawkers, skip all the information and head straight to the main pool.
